Patch and Wilma' Book, New York, and this and that..

posted by Patty James @ 3:38pm, Saturday 1 May 2010.

Not a very exciting day, but I guess something dramatic doesn't have to happen every day. Today I have taken one of my articles and expanded it for an on-line magazine, I have done some product evaluations for the Green Polka Dot Box, I have worked on the itinerary for the rest of the project, but until I hear back from Erin, I won't tell you about it yet. I also need to hear about the RV before I can finish planning. Hopefully on Monday morning I will have the answers before I leave here for kid's interviews and then on to Philadelphia for 2 days of TV and newspaper interviews.

As usual I have found some woods to walk in, although they certainly aren't a state park, but still, they're better than nothing. Patch and Wilma really do need off-leash time. Do you think they get that from me? As I was walking today, I thought about the book outline I have done for the kid's part of the journey-a cookbook with nutrition and lots of quotes from the kids. I'm excited about it. Now that I think about it, I worked on that again today too. Anyway...I was thinking that Patch and Wilma need their own book about their adventure. A kid's book with great illustrations. They would both take turns narrating it...Patch has to sound like Patch of course, dignified and yet a little neurotic; Wilma is just excited about everything....(very rough draft..bear with me..)

Patch and Wilma’s Big Adventure

Patch- Mom pulled into the driveway with this big thing that rolled down the road like our car did.  I guess it was our new dog -house.

Wilma- We walked in and I jumped right up onto the couch, which was right behind where Mom was going to sit. She looked at me funny, but let me stay there.  I knew that was my spot. We got to go to the ocean to try it out. It was really fun!

Patch- Mom kept putting things into it. I was getting a little nervous, but she said she would never leave me, so I tried to relax. We both had to go to the Vet (I don’t like it there) and got all sorts of stuff done.  It was awful.

Wilma- I’m so excited-we get to smell lots of new smells!

Later in Alabama...

Wilma- I heard that dogs could catch their own dinner, but until I saw that rabbit in front of me, I wasn't sure I'd get the chance...Patch and I took off after him and I didn't notice when Patch wasn't next to me anymore. I couldn't believe I caught us dinner! I was so proud! Then I looked around and Mom was in the field on the ground holding Patch. She was crying, but I couldn't hear what she was saying. I walked back with the rabbit in my mouth and he looked over at me. I knew he was o.k. then. Wow Wilma, Mom said, amazing! ...then she walked to another part of the field while Patch and I ate our dinner.

You get the drift...just the highlights of the trip. They walked around the French Quarter in New Orleans, they got to run on the beach in St. Augustine for a week, parks in Virginia, etc...lots of journey left. I think it will be cute. They could talk about their new friends- people and dogs- and about different parts of the country. Fun...

It's 6:30 now and I have a little more work to do, then I am going to finish planning my week in New York City. The interviews and media stops are all set and so far I have one party on Monday, the 10th, but would like to do something I haven't done while there before (ever) and I've been there many times. I am going to go to SoHo or some where and listen to local music, eat cheap ethnic food, and go to some funky art galleries (that I have done, but not recently.) I am also going to invite some friends over for dinner as I have an apartment with a kitchen and a rooftop patio. I am going to really have fun while there!

You might want to leave out the part where your dogs kill and eat a Peter Rabbit in a children's book. N

Good point Nancy!

I don't think so. Wilma was chasing dinner (vague-no peter cottontail was trying to get away visuals to be found) I put it in a natural way and what I have discovered is that kids in this country have a real disconnect with the natural world. Just my thoughts, a potential publisher might agree with you. I do, however (!!!), as you two know, generally take your advice and your opinions are what keep me going....Everyone else might absolutely agree with you. Let's see.....Love you two! Patty

Toni thinks it needs to come out too...3 to 1 so far!

I think that its nature and kids know that. Cats play with mice and dogs chase rabbits. Obviously the illustrations don't have to show any rabbits dying.

The decision about whether to include the "facts of life" in the book rests on two things: how important it is to you to include this piece of knowledge/experience and the age of children the book is geared towards. Some publishers will probably immediately discount the book because of it, and there will be some that like having all the "facts" available, because they know some parents will be looking for books with these kinds of truths in them. There will be a children's age level where most publishers/parents think it's OK to have this info in the book. I would say if it's important to YOU that kids of a given age learn about this, leave it in. It is after all, your book.
My opinion is that the "cycle of life" should stay, assuming an appropriate age level. I agree with you about the disconnect.
